Imperialism and the historical context of the developing 2011 Egyptian Revolution

The developing Egyptian revolution is examined in its structural relations and connections to previous Egyptian revolutions, as well as to imperialism. The current developments are proposed to be the inevitable result of the reversals of programs and goals of the 1952 Revolution, shortly after the death of its leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser, by his successors. It is further proposed that only the restoration and development of the specific programs and goals of 1952 Revolution can progressively resolve the immense problems that have accumulated over the decades, after the betrayal of that revolution. The 1952 Bourgeois Democratic Revolution was launched by the Free Officers Movement of the armed forces against the corrupt and repressive monarchy of King Farouk, under whom Egypt had become the most important lever of control and domination of the Middle East by Western imperialism in general and US imperialism in particular, as well as Zionism. The success of that revolution ended the century and a half of Mohammad Ali Dynasty rule and resulted in the establishment of a republic in 1953.Leader of the Revolution, Gamal Abdel Nasser tried to move towards a non-capitalist path of development and independent, the independence of the Zionist and imperialist expansion, domination and control, transformation of property relations and class and redistribution of wealth for the benefit of the masses of poor, agrarian reform to benefit the landless and poor, and leadership and unity of Arab countries. There was also a founder of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), with Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia, Ahmed Sukarno of Indonesia, and Jawaharlal Nehru of India. Under his leadership, Egypt had developed great international prestige and respect as well as a truly independent foreign policy. However after his death in 1970, his successors reversed all his major policies, objectives, and accomplishments; stopped the further development of Revolution; and put it in the reverse gear. This reversal was greatly enhanced under President Hosni Mubarak, who has been in power since 1981. The objective and subjective needs for the 2011 Egyptian Bourgeois Democratic Revolution have arisen as a result of these reversals of the 1952 Revolution, which was launched from above. The 2011 Revolution has been initiated by the great masses of Egyptian people. As such, it is more genuine and has greater potential for social and politico-economic progress.

I’ve always lived close to railway lines. When I was growing up in Orangeville, Ontario, I lived near the main station. Both the Canadian National Railway (CNR) and the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) passed through town. When my sister and I moved to a fifty acre farm in Dixie, Ontario (near Toronto) in 1960, the CPR bisected our land.

For the twenty-two years Karen and I have lived at our current address in Streetsville, Ontario, the CPR has been our neighbour across the back fence. People ask us, “Don’t the trains bother you?” We answer that we don’t even hear them.

We sit on the deck and view a lot of interesting stuff go by. One day I watched a trainload of tanks pass. Didn’t know Canada had so many tanks. We also see intriguing graffiti on the sides of tankers and boxcars. And there are cars from all over the U.S. and Canada.

This is the first shot of the trains I have taken from the deck, but there will be more. It’s best to take such pictures after the leaves have dropped, since it’s hard to see the trains through the summer foliage.

A beaver was chosen as the railway’s logo because it is one of the national symbols of Canada and represents the hardworking character of the company. The object of both praise and condemnation for over 120 years, the CPR remains an indisputable icon of Canadian nationalism.
